ABOUT
Helmut Levitt started to work in documentary photography, but last years he primarily creates street photography that captures the atmosphere of a city and people through its everyday moments. Helmut's work focuses on textures and details of urban environments, as well as the people interacting with those spaces.
His shots are mostly taken in natural light, demonstrating a high level of skill in managing shadow and light, which adds dynamic depth to his images.
His photos from cities of France, Israel, Cyprus emphasize the interaction between people and architecture.
For example, his images of Toulouse streets convey the authentic atmosphere of the city, combining its historic architecture with modern elements and people who seamlessly integrate into the scene. This highlights Levitt's ability to capture both the historical and contemporary aesthetics of cities.
His style can be described as informal, observant and philosophycal, with a leaning toward documentary photography, while also containing artistic composition where imortant role play colors . This approach makes his work significant not only from an aesthetic perspective but also culturally, as it captures the spirit of the time and place.
Looking at his photographs, it becomes clear that his development as a photographer was influenced by the spirit and aesthetics of such masters as Garry Winogrand, Ernst Haas,
Saul Leiter, and William Eggleston.
In Levitt's opinion, black-and-white photography is a convenient shelter to escape from colors. When a photo is in black and white, even the most average shot looks more serious and significant, even if there's nothing special behind it.
Imagine an Italian opera without French horns, clarinets, cellos, and violins, without the voices of tenors and sopranos—just drums and timpani. The rhythm would remain, of course, but the opera would lose 99% of its beauty.
The same can be said about the relationship between black-and-white and color photography.
If God gave us the ability to see the world in color, why not make use of this gift?
As a result, the overwhelming majority of Levitt's work is done in color, and only in rare cases where color does not enhance the image aesthetically does Helmut choose to shoot in monochrome.
